September 11, 2007 , Day 329

Friends,

This last week has been ... tumultuous, lets say. Before I forget, I need to mention that the job in Michigan didn't work out. I am working on a project in Yuma, Arizona, supporting the safety of our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. I started working on this last week, and I have deliverables due this Friday. Nothing like throwing me into the fire!

Thursday I had my colonoscopy and endoscopy as scheduled. I didn't eat all day Wednesday except for gulping down two liters of the most horrible tasting concoction you would ever believe. That was a laxative, of course. Of course, that ran through me with a great deal of alacrity, but the interesting thing was that Wednesday night was the first night of gastrointestinal peace and quiet I had had for two weeks. What an incredible relief that was. I was a little nervous about the procedures on Thursday, but I went to the hospital and they got an IV running real quickly and gave me some Demerol and some other sedative. After that, I remember lying down on my side, seeing a few glimpses of the colonoscopy video, and waking up in a pleasant haze of well being no worse for wear. The GI Doc said that they found that my stomach was very irritated and there were signs of inflammation in my intestines and colon. They did take some biopsies to try to determine what was going on. We haven't gotten any results back from those biopsies, but we are hoping they will lead to a logical reason for all of my suffering. We left the hospital and had a normal lunch, since I still felt fine. Thursday night we went to spin class, where I was very weak, but got some exercise finally. After we had dinner I went to bed. I started getting chills at about 8:30pm so we started checking my temperature, which started to go up through the evening. We ended up in the hospital again Thursday night in urgent care, where they pulled a lot of blood work and other labs. We were there until about 4am Friday. Everything was negative again. It is very frustrating to be sick and not know the reason for it. Later on Friday, my doctor called and asked me to come in to the hospital for more lab work, so off to the hospital we went for the third time in 24 hours. They wanted to check for Cytamegalovirus or CMV. I found out today that test was negative also.

I have been feeling fine ever since Wednesday, and eating normally since Thursday. Saturday I tried to ride with my cycle team, but I was too weak to get very far and only made it about 14 miles. We rested Sunday and then Menchie and I went for a ride early Monday morning on Fiesta Island. It was a high intensity ride on a very windy day. I did about 25 miles and felt great! Afterward, I took Menchie to work with me so that I could show her my new office and so that we could lay out the furniture which is arriving today in the office. This morning we went to the hospital again for my regular pentamadine treatment and my doctor's appointment. The pentamadine was horrible as usual, although my body is tolerating it much better. My doctor was happy with my lab results. We also went to spin class this evening. I was able to get through the whole routine and hit all the target cadences for the target amount of times except for standing for 12 minutes. That is still too hard for me, and I have to watch my heart rate. I would stand until my heart rate got to 86% and then sit until it got down to 79% and start over again. It was still a great workout.

Other than that, it has been an uneventful week. My email is not working today, and my web site is down. Sometime tonight I hope they get it fixed so I can send this email. Otherwise, I will send it in the morning.

On the medical front, I am eliminating one Magnesium pill per day from my diet. That's all the doctor would give me. I will be seeing the doctor again the day before we leave for Honolulu at the end of the month.
