October 18, 2006 , Day 1

Friends,

Good evening. Today had a hard start and didn't get much better through the day, although there were several highlights. I had real trouble sleeping during the night, and I was pretty depressed. I didn't want to wake up. I went for a walk, and had to rush back to my bed so I could almost faint there due to dehydration. The highlight of my day was a visit from some cycling friends. It was a wonderful, surprise visit that bouyed my spirits immensely. After noon, they gave ne the Methotrexate for the first time. Shortly afterward I went to sleep for a couple of hours. I woke up with my mouth feeling like it was on fire. I took some stuff called Gell Coat that coats your mouth with a lidocane gell. That helped out a lot. My mouth is fairly calm right now. I am hoping to get a lot of sleep tonight. If I have more mouth pain, they will set up a morphine drip. I have been pretty nauseated today from the Methotrexate also, so no eating. Getting food past the mouth sores is a challenge anyway. They expect the mouth sores to last for a couple of weeks. I think this is where they need to put me into one of those science fiction medical coffins where they make you unconscious and fix everything, and then wake you up healthy. That would be nice. I am hoping if I can get more sleep, I will feel better and have a more positive outlook on things. It really feels good, at the end of the day, to be writing and sharing with you all. Thanks.

On the medical front, we have added a drug called Actigal, which is a big capsul that must be taken orally. Ugnhh. Actigal helps to prevent something called Venal Occlusive Disease (VOD), a problem with the Liver. Of course we started the Methotrexate today too. I will be getting three more doses over the next 10 days or so.
