October 16, 2007 , Day 364
Friends,
Good evening to all! Or good morning if you read this tomorrow. Tomorrow is my third first birthday! I am sure you are all jealous that I have more birthdays than any of you guys. If I count all of them serially, I will really start to be old really fast. I get three years older every year! I wonder if I can convince the Navy that I am retirement age by doing that. Hmmmm. It is federal government kind of math, but I doubt it. Anyway, everybody hum a few bars of happy birthday. I MADE IT TO ONE YEAR! I think I did it with some style too.
This last week has been crazy in a major way. On Monday or Tuesday last week, my nephew came home with a cold. Menchie had it on Wednesday, and I got it in the intestines on Thursday. Menchie also started working on Thursday. Since this sequence of events was identical to the last time I got so sick for three weeks (except for the part about Menchie starting work), I decided not to wait for a colonoscopy for three weeks. I just quit eating on Thursday. I put myself on a clear liquid diet. The big problem was that Menchie and I were going to be riding in the MS 150 over the weekend. I needed to prepare by increasing fluids and carbohydrates in my system. Diarrhea certainly wasn't going to be a big help. For a while I tried to figure out how I was going to hide the problem from Menchie so she would still let me ride, but I couldn't figure it out, so I told her when I got home. By going on the liquid diet, I was fine by Thursday evening. Friday morning I had a banana with no problems. I had a banana for lunch with no problem. Friday evening I had a bunch of Chinese noodles for dinner with no problems. It looked like the ride was on.
I drove up to Carlsbad on Friday afternoon and dropped my car there. I was going to go in the morning, but Menchie locked my keys in the car. I took the bus, train and trolley back home. Saturday morning we left home at 4am to catch a bus from Mission Bay to Irvine, in Orange County. We started riding back to Carlsbad at about 8am. There were lots of hills and interesting sceneries, even a few shrubberies. When we got to Carlsbad, we real quick packed the bikes in the car and drove to the finale party for our Honolulu Ride. That was a wonderful event, and the last time the Honolulu team will meet as a team. From there, we raced home, got cleaned up real quick, and went to a Debutante Ball for a friend's daughter. That was a lot of fun also, and a really big party. We raced home afterward and did some power sleeping. Sunday morning we drove up to Carlsbad to start riding again. We started again a little after 8am. We were both a little stiff and a little tired. Once we warmed up we were fine. I felt real strong and my heart rate was quite low. My legs were a little tired but we kept on. The big challenge was Torrey Pines. I had only ridden up Torrey Pines once non-stop since my transplant. I cruised up. It took a long time, but I didn't stop and I made it again. YAHOOOOO. And a young lady latched onto Menchie's wheel and we paced her. Actually, I paced Menchie too. This was Menchie's first ride up Torrey on her new bike and it was easy for her. We got into La Jolla and some steep little hills and my legs and energy gave out. I had serious engine problems so we threw in the towel and got a ride to the end, about 15 more miles away where we had lunch and celebrated. The participating riders raised over 1.3 million dollars to help find a cure for MS. After the ride was over, we rode the trolley and bus up to Carlsbad to get our car that was still there, and finally got home mid evening. Other than that, our weekend was uneventful.
Today I started on dental work. I got 5 crowns done today. OUCH! Maybe I will get a bunch of fillings done next week.
On the medical front, nothing new. No appointments, no changes.
Have a great week! We are partying tomorrow!
