November 3, 2003, DAY #6

Friends,

I broke the hemophiliac threshold today! So now I am the Anemic-Hemophiliac-Neutropenic-Bubble-Boy! I actually feel better today, although last night I had a light fever, probably caused by Abelcet. Otherwise, the routine continues. I didn't get any Zofran last night, but they gave me some more this morning. I am predicting I will be getting a platelet transfusion tomorrow. They haven't said anything about moving me to an isolation room yet.

As we walk the halls, we look at all the pictures of the patients who have survived BMT. There is one of a guy skydiving, with a caption of "Life after Bone Marrow Transplant". One picture that is especially moving to me is a picture of a group of survivors on top of a 13000 foot peak One of my goals is to stand on top of Mt San Jacinto again, with Menchie, here in Southern California. It is about 10,800 feet tall. My hiking friends just went there recently, I hope to join them as soon as I can. Menchie and I will have a lot of work to do to get me back into shape for that.

On the medical front, my creatinine is creeping up. It was up to 1.5 today. They are watching that pretty closely. That is an indicator of kidney function. I don't want to go into kidney failure again. In response, they are reducing the dose of Cyclosporine A, and changing from Abelcet to a drug related to Atraconazole. I am SOOOOO happy about that. That Abelcet just tears me up. My WBC is below .2! I don't think they can measure below that accurately. Platelets dropped like a rock too.
