May 01, 2007 , Day 196

Friends,

I hope everyone has had a wonderful Mayday! Here in San Diego, it started out as a dark and stormy day. We had thunderstorms but very little precipitation. This has been a wild day and a wild week. This morning I worked with a jersey manufacturer to design a cycling jersey I will be selling as a fundraiser. It was raining a little, so we delayed our departure to Fiesta Island for a bike ride. When we finally got there, about 11am, the roads were getting dry and the weather was cool. Great for riding. I cut the intensity and the pace down a little and rode for 20 miles. I have a condition called Orthostatic Hypotension. This is low blood pressure when standing. When I am riding this condition is much worse, because my arm and leg muscles are demanding high amounts of blood. When I stop riding and stand for a few minutes, there is no muscle action to get the blood out of my legs and back up to my heart and brain. I experimented with avoiding this condition today, since it could be an issue when I am riding on the road and have to stop at lights and other places. My experiment was to simply bend over and rest my head on my handlebars while flexing my calves. This worked great. Hopefully, I can refine this to avoid the problem in the future. Anyway, after the ride we went home, cleaned up and went to dinner with a friend who was in from Philedelphia, then we went to a Team in Training information meeting where I spoke briefly. Now I am really tired.

Since my last update, I rode on Friday, but had to cut it short due to the Orthostatic Hypotension. Very disappointing, and it really scared Menchie. I was pretty out of it. Sunday I did hill climbing repeats on a hill outside our house. That was a great ride, although I only did about 2.5 miles. The distance isn't that important. It was a good workout. Also this week, my nephew Danny's car broke down and his mom decided to buy another car. I helped them find a car, did a bunch of research, arranged financing for them, and helped negotiate the deal. It was fun. Since it was a referral to the car dealer, they give a $100.00 donation to my favorite charity! If you need to buy a car, let me know. I could use a lot more donations. Speaking of that, I mentioned I spoke today at an informaion meeting. I have spoken at 4 so far since Saturday, when I signed up for the Honolulu program. I think most of you got my donation request. I have a fundraising goal of $10,000.00. Some of you have already donated. You are great! It would really be nice to get lots of donations right away so I don't have to worry about that any more and can concentrate on riding and getting fit so I can do the century. If you want to donate and don't have that other email, you can either send a check to me at 5805 Water Street, La Mesa, Ca, 91942, or go to the web site below and use your credit card. Checks should be made out to LLS.

http://www.active.com/donate/tntsdh/tntsdhTWilcox1 I had another idea of how you can make a donation. If someone would like to give us airline miles, we could use them to buy a ticket to Hawaii for Menchie, rent a car there, or we could also redeem the miles for merchandise that could be used as prizes in a raffle or other event.

My next doctor appointment is next Tuesday. I will send my next update then unless something really significant happens.
