March 06, 2007 , Day 140
Friends,
I had my checkup today. Almost everything was positive. The only thing I didn't care for was my creatinine going up to 14. Other than that, my blood work was all good. Platelets jumped a lot as you can see below. I hope that trend continues. My doctor is very pleased with my progress. He is pretty happy with my tongue. It is healing pretty well. Much of it still shows GVHD, but my doctor said it is getting better. It still tingles a little painfully all the time. They also think I have very mild GVHD on my shins. The mild GVHD is good for killing off any leukemic cells that are hanging around, so it is not all bad. They decided that I have a fungal infection on my toes, so we are getting some medicine for that. Other than that, everything is going pretty well. My doctor told me I can ride my bike when my platelets hit 50, and he thinks it will be there for my next appointment with him. I hope so! I had a pentamadine treatment today, which really takes the wind out of my sails.
On an interesting note, one of the doctors I see regularly is a fellow biker. In fact, we met while we were in training for the 2005 Solvang Century. Many of you may recall that Menchie and I rode the Solvang Century again last year, in the rain, sleet, hail and snow. At that time, this doctor was being treated for cancer. The 2007 Solvang Century is next weekend, and our doctor friend is going to ride it again. Quite a remarkable achievement. Maybe Menchie and I will ride it in 2008.
I mentioned in my last update that I was having some difficulty with the long term disability company. It was positively resolved a couple of days later.
I have continued walking and riding my bike in the trainer. Saturday Menchie got really upset with me because I started walking around Fiesta Island while she was riding there. I didn't tell her I was going to do it, because I figured she wouldn't ride. Anyway, I was carrying a camp chair and had my walking stick. We figure I walked about .7 or .8 mile. It was a total of about 1 hour of walking with two five minute rests toward the end. Menchie cut her ride short to walk with me to the car. I think she was really mad at me. I had to do it. Anyway, we both survived the incident. I'm looking forward to doing it again soon! Fortunately, in my weakened condition, Menchie can't beat me up too bad. I guess I'd better watch out when my platelet count gets up higher! I won't bruise so easily then. :-)
On the medical front, I will be using an Over-The-Counter lotion on my toes. No other changes until I quit taking Flagyl later this week. I will be seeing the doctor in 2 weeks. Not even any lab work next week. I will plan on sending the next update in two weeks!
Lab results: All counts are up! Platelets sure are finally making some progress. I think it is because of Menchie's great cooking.
