February 6, 2004 DAY #101

Friends,

Well, we got to San Diego. You probably weren't expecting an update so soon. We pulled in the driveway about 7pm last night. I was so exhausted, I went immediately to bed. We took my 8pm temperature, and it was 98.6. Before long, I started having chills. I asked Menchie to take my temp again about 9. It was something like 99.6. By 9:30 my temperature was 100.7. That is over the threshold for going to the hospital. We went to the emergency room at Scripps Green Hospital. By midnight my temperature was over 103. The staff eventually got around to calling a Bone Marrow Transplant doctor at 2am, and finding out what they should do about my fever, which they were not monitoring at all. They gave me Levaquin, an antibiotic via IV, and Tylenol. We went home about 4am from the hospital. The fever started to go down at about 6am, and my temperature has been relatively normal off and on since about noon. I actually got an hour or so of sleep this morning. Unfortunately, the diarrhea started at about 6am also. I have been drinking like a fish, and trying to eat, but I don't have much appetite. Levequin also affects the tasted buds, so nothing tastes good anyway. Not exactly the homecoming I was hoping for.

This afternoon, I had a doctors appointment with my San Diego Doctor. They drew blood again for cultures and lab work. My temperature was normal. The biggest problem was getting to the appointment, since I was in no condition to drive. Our wonderful next door neighbor took us up to Scripps Encinitas for the appointment. I have another appointment there on Monday. Hopefully I will be able to drive.

On the medical front, the only real change is the Levequin. I am concerned about my creatinine going up more because of the diarrhea.
