August 31, 2006 , Day 21

Friends,

A different day today. I had fevers through the night. That with constant coughing made sleep very difficult. I tried some cough suppressant about 3am and slept pretty well after that. I went through most of the day with no fevers, waiting for the Physical Therapist show up, but she came just when I was going down to get another chest CT Scan. At 4pm the chills really hit hard, so they gave me some Demerol which helped for about 5 minutes. Packed on ice again! I got a unit of blood this morning with no benadryl, so it was nice to stay conscious. They are also starting the testing for the Bone Marrow Transplant. The doctor made a statement today about how quickly they want to start the transplant. He said they didn't care if I was in remission or not. Pretty heady stuff. Move fast and kill it dead. Hopefully the patient will survive.

We got several cards and a stuffed animal today. We really appreciate all the support we get out there. Thanks!

On the medical front-They increased the dose of the antibiotic for the pneumonia. They identified the bug, and they are resistant to almost everything, and if they encounter something new, they develop resistance to that to. So the antibiotic is just to try to keep the infection in check until I get my immune system back, which should clear it up rather handily. My fluid levels are way down, so walking or sitting is not nearly as painful as it was earlier. I hope to see the Physical Therapist tomorrow. The rashes continue to get better. Some of the skin colors have started to go back to normal, although I am peeling everywhere. Except for these fevers I am feeling better just about every day.

The lab results show that the brief uptrend was not recovery, so we will have to wait for a couple more days.
