August 17, 2007 , Day 304

Friends,

I completed installation of a radio in my new car yesterday, as well as installation of the trailer hitch and bike rack. This has been a real busy week. I also went to a support group on Wednesday evening. It was a great meeting. I haven't shared much in the way of deep thoughts recently because my updates have been rather long. I don't have many deep thoughts today either, other than to reflect a little on the future, in light of treatments and things. I mentioned Tuesday that my teeth are in pretty ragged shape. As I said, it was pretty devastating. This could be the first in a long line of long term side effects that will plague me for the rest of my life. Assuming I survive and don't relapse, I will be striving to excel in my life as I have always done. I don't accept being sick. I don't accept being less than I was. I may loose my teeth, or my sight, but life will go on, and I will make it as good as I can make it. That is one reason, a big one, I ride my bike on ridiculous things like century rides. My life is good, and getting better. I have victories every day. I woke up this morning and said to Menchie, "Lets go make a better life for ourselves!" Some days it is hard to do for myself, so I try to make a better life for Menchie. That works better some times. As I said at the support group, it doesn't matter what your restrictions are, find something to do, and do it well. For me it is being the slowest rider on the Honolulu Century team. I might have to change that goal soon. I have been catching up with some of the other riders on occasion. For others it could be cooking, or running, or growing flowers, or photography. To borrow a phrase from Nike, "Just Do It!"

I had my doctors appointment today. It went well. I have been having more intestinal distress and he is concerned about that. May need to knock down an infection or something. He was upbeat about my working in Michigan and is finding a doctor there I can go to if there is an emergency. He wants to speak to my dentist so they can coordinate my dental treatment. He said that my teeth will continue to be a problem, but he wants to keep up with it if possible. He doesn't want me to get some of the more aggressive procedures yet. I have a nice collection of bruises from installing my radio that Menchie wanted to point out to him but he wasn't concerned, saying they were only skin deep. Otherwise they were very pleased. My next doctor appointment is on September 11, although I have a pentamadine treatment this coming Tuesday. Joy.

On the medical front, no changes to any medications this time. Rats! Creatine was up a little, but I think that was due to sitting in the car for hours at a time in the heat of the last couple days. Most blood counts are about the same, except for the platelets, which are up a lot. YEAAAAH!!!! I thought maybe my Hemoglobin was up a lot since I am getting so much stronger on the bike, but it is about the same. I guess I am just getting stronger.

Lab results: Another huge jump in platelet count!

I don't know what kind of email access I will have while on travel, so I may not be able to keep up the weekly updates. I will do the best I can.

Have a great weekend!
