August 07, 2007 , Day 294

Friends,

Well, another wild week! We went to spin on Thursday, looked at cars on Friday, rode on Saturday, went to a baby shower on Sunday, bought materials for Menchie's new desk on Monday and started working on that, and today I had jury duty, we bought a car, and we rode on Fiesta Island. Other than that we have not been very busy. I still haven't been reinstated at work, so I am starting to try to figure out what is going on. I will start working on that tomorrow during breaks from jury duty, I guess. I haven't been picked for the jury yet, but it is still possible.

Let me back up and fill in some of the details. Thursday we went to Spin class. I did most of the exercises but I took it a little easy because it tends to come back to haunt me on my Saturday rides if I work too hard on Thursday. Last week we started researching what kind of car we should get. We decided to replace the truck because Menchie doesn't know how to drive a standard transmission, and we wanted to get a vehicle with higher gas mileage. By Friday we had pretty much settled on getting a Toyota Matrix, so we visited a whole lot of Toyota dealers to try to find a used one in our price range. Most of the used ones were more expensive than the new ones, so we dug up some more cash and bought a new one today. Pretty exciting.

The ride on Saturday was a long, hard, hot ride again. I actually caught up with the B1 team, a group generally faster and stronger than me, and we rode with them for 20 miles or so before they left me behind. Unlike last week, I made it up West Lilac and Champaign all the way, without stopping. Well, actually I had to stop and change a tire for my mentor part way up Champaign, but that was our only stop on that hill, and I stopped for a drink on West Lilac in a shady spot, since I didn't feel comfortable drinking while riding up the hill. Both hills are about 5 miles long and both have about 600 feet of elevation gain. Pretty tough hills for someone in my delicate condition. I was pretty jazzed by making it all the way. The total distance of the ride was about 52 miles, since I had to cut it a little short to get back to the cars with an injured rider in the easiest way possible. Hopefully this weekend I will be able to get in a few more miles. Our ride today was short, only 8 miles or so, since we got there late after buying a car.

Sunday's baby shower was great fun, and a whole bunch of our riding friends showed up at the party. We gave the expectant parents home made gifts, a baby afghan from Menchie, and a dreamcatcher from me. Both were apparently highly appreciated. Several people thought I should sell the dreamcatchers. Menchie also cooked Lumpia for the party, and that went over great too!!!

This coming week promises to be busy also. We have to buy some accessories for transporting bicycles on our new car. We also need to work out the financing and insurance and all that. I need to finish Menchie's desk as quickly as possible or she will get mad at me. We also have to sell our pickup. Anyone want a nice used pickup truck?

My next doctor's appointment has been moved to Friday the 17th, so I guess I will have two updates next week.

Have a great week!
