April 26, 2007 , Day 191

Friends,

Wow, April is almost over. Our trip to Chicago went well. It sure was good to see my folks. My mom has not been able to travel due to medical problems of her own, so I decided to go see her. She is continuing to recover well. I was nervous about the trip and the flight, but it went well, with no problems. We also are continuing to ride. I rode a little in Chicago, but rode again on Tuesday. It was a hard ride. I felt tired, but I made it to 16 miles like the last time. Just a touch faster. Some friends were on the island and they rode with me for a while and we talked about everything. It was great fun.

I have decided to train for the Honolulu Century which is on September 30. I will need to start fundraising for that. I am not sure I will be physically capable of doing it, but I have been improving steadily. If I do accomplish it, it will be a major achievement in my book. Doing a century ride less than 1 year after a stem cell transplant! That would be something. My dad thinks that my anemia will prevent me from completing the ride. I think he just said that to motivate me. I will be going to the "Info meetings" for this and other fall Team N Training events and saying a few words to the people there to try to encourage them to become involved. I would encourage anyone in my audience here who likes to get out and ride or run, to consider joining in the TNT effort. We would love to have you.

My doctor appointment went real well. Now that I am riding, I am real nervous about going to the doctor. I am afraid my platelets will drop and he won't let me ride again. That did not happen this time, as my platelets rose again. Everything else looked good. My Vitamin B12 levels were fine, as were my Folate levels, so they are not causing my anemia, fortunately. I guess I will just have to wait and "gut it out".

On the medical front, the doctor told me to cut my magnesium intake in half. If I continue to hold a good magnesium blood level, he will probably stop it. He doesn't want to reduce my cyclosporine yet because of the chronic GVHD on my tongue and shins. When I asked him about my MCV, he just kind of shrugged. My creatinine was back up to 1.5.

Lab results: Blood counts are mixed, but the really important ones are up.
